Harlingen is a city in Cameron County, Texas County in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, United States. The city covers more than 34 sq mi (88 km²) and is the second largest city in Cameron County and the third largest in the Rio Grande Valley after Brownsville, Texas and McAllen, Texas As of the 2000 United States Census census, the city had a total population of 57,564.In recent research, 14% of people in Harlingen, Texas have seen a friend at a drug treatment program for drugs rehabilitation.

World War II military installations in Harlingen caused a jump in population from 23,000 in 1950 to 41,000 by 1960. Harlingen Army Air Field preceded Harlingen Air Force Base, which closed in 1962.
