Maynardville is a city in and the county seat of Union County, Tennessee County , Tennessee, United States. Its population was 1,782 at the United States Census, 2000 census. It is included in the Knoxville, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area.In recent research, 14% of people in Maynardville, Tennessee have visited a loved one at a drug addiction treatment center for dual diagnosis drug rehab.Liberty was renamed "Maynardville" in honor of Horace Maynard (1814-1882), a Knoxville-area attorney and later U.S. Postmaster General. Shortly after the Tennessee state legislature passed legislation authorizing the creation of Union County, Knox County, Tennessee County, disgruntled over the loss of land that would go toward the creation of the new county, managed to secure an injunction blocking the county's creation. The new county's supporters retained the services of Horace Maynard, who successfully defended the new county in litigation proceedings. Union County was formally recognized in 1856.
